A Spiritual Moment

The other day I asked the Dental Assistant who was cleaning my teeth how her “spiritual life” was going. She paused and said, “Well, if you mean going to church, I haven’t been for a while, but my husband and I are trying something new this year. At the beginning of November, we started giving thanks for three new things every morning, and we are going to do this until Thanksgiving Day.”
“Wow,” I thought to myself (because by this time her hands were in my mouth cleaning away, so I couldn’t talk), “I guess giving thanks is being spiritual to some extent, as long as you are giving thanks to God.” After a few minutes, I was able to speak for just a few seconds as she switched the tools she was using, and I said, “Huh, that’s pretty cool, I’ve never heard of that before, but I give you credit for trying something different.” She said, “Thanks, it’s been a challenge,” and that was it, because she was back at work doing her job. As she was working on my teeth, I thought to myself, “Being spiritual can involve anything, anytime, anywhere, as long as it seeks to reflect God’s Holy Spirited activity in your life or in the lives of others.” Now, whether this woman and her husband were motivated by the Holy Spirit to give thanks everyday, I don’t know. But, I do know that God can work through what is most personal, caring, kind, and gentle in our lives, including the hands that were busy cleaning away in my mouth. As the old saying goes, sometimes what is the most “earthy” about us is also where we are the most “spiritual”, and I couldn’t think of anything more earthy than having my teeth cleaned. So, I guess it was a “spiritual moment” of sorts right there in the dentist chair.

God as my Co-Pilot

Tired of the cold weather, so am I. But, what can you do, you can’t escape the weather, and if you do (for a little while), you’ve got to come back and deal with it whether you like it or not. And so it is with life, you can’t escape life itself, and if you do (for a little while), you’ve got to come back to reality and deal with it whether you like it or not. Sometimes, dealing with reality is like dealing with in-climate weather, all you can do is grit your teeth and slug through it. But, faith reminds us that we are not alone; that we have a God who walks beside us through good times and bad, through thick and thin, through rough weather and smooth going. Faith is not a crutch to lean on (as some people say), but a way of facing reality with the assurance of knowing that God will always be there to guide and encourage you, and sometimes lead the way. As someone once said, “Having God as my co-pilot in life, is the best thing that’s ever happened to me!”

So Help Me God

Feeling insecure, inadequate, and unqualified…welcome to reality! For most of us, these feelings are a normal part of our lives as we deal with all the situations, problems, and difficulties that confront us on a daily basis. We are in good company though, because many of the Biblical characters we uphold as examples to follow had the same feelings of insecurity, inadequacy, and lack of qualification, but with God’s help they moved mountains and accomplished much. Everyday, in the midst of those same “feelings” they would say, “So help me God!”, and He did!

Making Room

It never ceases to amaze me, how we seek to push our own agendas, needs, and accomplishments, as though they are all that matter in this world. It is only when you and I allow ourselves to be captured by a much greater cause (something bigger and greater than we could ever imagine) that we are willing to take our “blinders” off and see the world from God’s perspective. It is then that we choose respectively to make room for the ideas, thoughts, and opinions of others!

Blessed

When Jesus spoke about being “blessed”, it had nothing to do with fame, fortune, riches, or power; instead it had everything to do with humility, gratitude, love, and forgiveness. Jesus was offered all the fame, fortune, riches, and power the world could give. He could have had all these things in the very palms of His hands; instead he chose to use those very same palms to heal, serve, embrace, and sacrifice. Which concept of being “blessed” we choose today can make all the difference in the world!

Never Alone

The great thing about taking our relationship with God seriously and letting it become a living, breathing reality in our lives is that we can be rest assured we are never alone. No matter how bleak and overwhelming the circumstances of our lives, we have the assurance that God is there, for He will never forsake us, or abandon us. When the rest of the world seems not to care, God does! So,don’t give up or get discouraged, for there are many who survived and beat he odds by believing and trusting in the fact that they are never alone!

Feeding Time

I’ve been told that there is apart of us that seeks to feed on anything this world has to offer. The world is like a “country buffet” with all sorts of tantalizing goodies for us to chew on, but the nutritional value is lacking and the cost overwhelming. Why not feed instead on what God has to offer: the power of prayer, the richness of His word, the joy of worship, the support of others. There is no cost to what God has to offer, and the nutritional value lasts forever!

Trust in God

Trust in God means forsaking our natural instincts, no matter how things look, and trusting in God’s plan for our lives. Trust in God means asking God to give us the wisdom and understanding we need for the direction and guidance of our lives. Trust in God means not running away from our difficulties, but trusting in the One who says,”Do not be afraid, for I am with you and will guide and protect you, even through the darkest of times!”

Creative Communication

It then prayerfully moves into the inner sanctum of our lives by bridging the gap between our conscious and subconscious awareness of who we are as children of God. It then proceeds towards an outward expression in fresh and creative ways guided by God’s Word and motivated by the Holy Spirit!
