A little girl from the kindergarten class I was teaching came up to me the other day and said, “God created this beautiful day!” Wow, I was shocked, this was the first time in eight months of substitute teaching that any student talked to me about God. We just finished talking about the weather and it was a gorgeous day. “Out of the mouth of babes!” I thought to myself, still too young to realize that you just don’t talk about God at school, or anywhere else in public for that matter. I was tempted to ask her if she believed in God, but I didn’t. I just assumed she did, why else would she say, “God created this beautiful day!” I also didn’t want to get into trouble. You never know these days what could happen if someone found out I was trying to “push” God in a kindergarten class. God forbid! But, anyway, she made my day, God bless her. She probably has no idea I’m even talking about her. It was just an innocent comment that came out of her mouth without any pretense or concern, just naturally, in a childlike manner. Maybe that’s why Jesus often talked about having the faith of a child, or entering the Kingdom of God as a child, or referred to those who followed him as children of the Heavenly Father. Maybe that’s what we’ve lost over the years as we’ve grown more “sophisticated”, is that childlike innocence without any pretense or concern, just praising God for a beautiful day, nothing more nothing less!
