Three Legs to Stand On

When all is said and done, on which leg do you stand? Is it the love you have for yourself? Is it the love you have for God? Is it the love you have for others? Or, is it a combination of all three: a healthy love for oneself, in conjunction with a healthy love for God, in conjunction with a healthy love for others? It was Jesus who told His disciples that they must learn to love God, learn to love themselves, and learn to love others as they would want to be loved. With this challenge, Jesus gave His disciples three legs to stand on, i.e. on which to build their new lives. For like a three legged stool, you can’t have one without the other, for if you do, you will surely stumble and fall. It’s all about the love of God flowing into our lives and then back out into the lives of others. It was a brand new way to live, a three pronged approach reaching upward, inward, and outward all at the same time. How exciting it must have been for the Disciples to go out and spread the Good News of this three dimensional (Trinitarian) God working in their lives in a three dimensional manner. Has anything changed for us as disciples of Jesus today, no, nothing at all, except maybe they didn’t have three legged stools back then!
